Choosing Our Paths:
Personalizing Our Education at Twinfield

I left U-32 for a lot of reasons, the main one being that I wasn't getting the extra help that I wanted. When you have a large class, and your teachers are always busy, it's really hard to get one on one time with them to work through a concept you may be having trouble with. At Twinfield, the classes are small, so I am able to get most of the one on one time I need in class, but if I don't there's always X day (which is great) or the teachers can almost always find time to meet with me. The social setting at Twinfield is also pretty great, from what I can tell, everyone tends to get along, regardless of differences they may have. There's no bullying or ostracism that I can see either. The overall environment in Twinfield is much more welcoming and friendly and I love it!
I have always want to be a nurse. So, I have taken advantage of the Renaissance Program to pursue learning about nursing. I have been working to shadow different types of nurses and it has really enhanced my knowledge. I also plan to utilize the dual enrollment opportunity to take a class at CCV next year. I plan on taking anatomy and physiology.

When I entered high school, I had a direction: medicine. From a young age, the human body and the way to fix it when a catastrophe occurred ha fascinated me. Throughout my high school career, I have found ways to tailor my education and experiences around this central goal while still maintaining a core group of traditional classes. I find success in the traditional classroom experience, so I use Renaissance and other opportunities to supplement my education and help me explore the subjects that truly interest me. In my freshman year I participated in a year long Anatomy and Physiology study with a physical therapist, and another year-long study of Epidemiology in my sophomore year with the state epidemiologist. I have also create studies in Paper Arts, Independent Reading, and Yoga for a bit of fun. Outside of school and the Renaissance program, I have found ways to explore my love for science and medicine even more. I participated in the Dartmouth Health Careers Institute and traveled to Belize to earn my Wilderness First Responder Certification. Outside of medicine, I have learned the skills of a business by co-founding the Brewed Awakening Café (our student café at Twinfield). This was an amazing opportunity for hands-on learning. At Twinfield, I am able to find the perfect balance between everything I need learn and want to explore. I believe education should be an enriching experience, and one that allows students to follow paths of their own design to achieve goals specific to them.

I don’t do well sitting in a class and learning from a textbook. I like to learn with hands-on projects and working with teachers one on one. So I’ve personalized my learning at Twinfield by creating a lot of my own studies through the Renaissance program, taking college course via dual enrollment and collaborating with adults to redesign the system via the YATST and Twinfield's Communicating School Redesign Team. The studies I’ve created through Renaissance include: creative writing, piano, Latino cooking, Norse mythology and environmental activism. I took True Stories through Goddard College. This course taught me how to make audio stories, which can be broadcast over the radio. I also got an English credit by participating in the Communicating School Redesign class with teachers and students. For my senior year I will be going to Barre Technical Center to study natural resources and learning the art of glassblowing through Renaissance.
